Puraskara means an accolade or reward and it brought together the professional wing Bhaskar’s Arts Academy with the teaching wing Nrityalaya Aesthetics Society. It featured the work of several new initiatives, starting with a performance by the newly formed youth orchestra Swathi, under the leadership of music director Ghanavenothan Retnam and music head of department Ampili Pradeep. Students of Ambujah Thiru who have just completed their Diploma in Bharatanatyam then presented Jatayu Moksha, a Kathakali work, put together by Kalamandalam Biju. These students had undergone 10 months of training to stage this work. Then four young choreographers, M Dhana Bharathi, Shangari Sadheesh, Hemalatha Sathasivam and Usha Anbalagan, showcased their first mini dance-dramas in Tales from the Panchatantra. They were groomed through our Choreographers’ Lab and worked with dancers from Nrityalaya. Puraskara also gave recognition to some of our staff for their contributions. It presented Natya Kala Bhushana awards to SP Biju and Ambujah Thiru, Sangitha Kala Bhushana to Ghanavenothan Retnam and Natya Kala Upasana to Thava Rani Mohan.

This Kathakali work depicted the events leading up to Lord Vishnu’s Narasimha avathar. Under the creative direction of Kalamandalam Biju, who played the role of the terror Hiranyakasipu, the work introduced some of our upcoming talents. Priyadarshini Nagarajah played the role of the young Prahalada and is the first female to take on a full-length production with Bhaskar’s Kathakali Troupe. Kalarangam Santhosh gave the production some comedic relief through his portrayal of Shukrachaarya.
